Asus laptop turns off randomly

I've had my laptop for just over a year and I've had this problem pretty much from the start. It gradually happened more frequently as the year went by, it also started crashing sometimes too. A couple of months ago it wouldn't start up, I got it to do a system restore, but everytime it was shut down or went to sleep it wouldn't start up again. I took it back to PC World and they sent to Asus to be fixed, they reckoned the cause was a faulty hard disk, so they replaced it. I've now had it back for about 3 weeks and it just suddenly switched off again, so it obviously hasn't fixed that problem. When it goes off there's a squeak as if the disk is stopping suddenly. There's no pattern as to when it happens, and I'm often not really doing much with my laptop. It's not overheating, it never tends to get particularly hot. I'm now at a loss as to why this is happening. It's so random that it would be impossible to show it someone when it happens.

Doesn't sound like the problem was fixed, and you should return it. Disks should never 'squeak' and is a sure sign the drive is faulty. That they had returned it to ASUS to be fixed to begin with is a VERY bad sign and should have immediately told you to get a refund. The problem can be any number of things, but considering the 'squeak' I am laying bets the drive will be always a problem in any solution till it is corrected.

The hard disk was replaced though, so it's unlikely a second one is faulty. It was sent to Asus to be fixed because it was just about still under warranty and Asus insist they fix it when it's under warranty.

Actually it is quite possible the second one is faulty if they are using a series (they buy in packs of thousands) hard drive and just 'grabbed a new one', replaced it, reimaged, reimage took, ship back done. But no one heard the 'squeek'. If this squeek is repeatable then the drive is faulty (yes I have seen myself and even read here others whom had gone through 3 or 4 drives because they were just a bad 'lot').
