I have an Asus vivobook s500ca that I've had since new years eve and I have a problem that has me terrified. Ever since I updated to windows 8.1 which was around the day I first got it, my laptop has a habit of randomly shutting down with no warning, but no BSOD. So far it has only happened 4 times over the course of a week. I thought I got rid of it until yesterday when it happened for the 4th time last night. Here's the event log for my most recent encounter.

So far I've only come across it when the laptop is plugged in. Have not came across it when not plugged in. As of now I got all update drivers from asus's website. Ran scans through avast and malwarebytes, found nothing fishy. I don't think it's overheating as I see my temp's are at a stable 50C. I don't think it's the RAM since I just got this. I'm thinking it's an electrical problem because I connected to my room and recently office outlets and witnessed it happen on both. Right now I took precautions by removing some of the bloatware asus included such as instant on, smart gesture, and power4gear hybrid. What to do you guys think it is? I just really don't want to see this happen ever again.

Solution
you could try a disk defrag (unless it does so automatically already). to maybe extend the life a little longer, get off important files to backup and get ready for the replacement.

Well, I think I may have found what may be causing it. I've learned that all event 41's I've had are preceeded by event 6's (filter manager) and I saw there's a pattern with it. 3 event 6's occur during the shutdown, and their involved with aswSnx, aswSP, and npsvctrig. I learned that aswsnx and aswsp are involved with avast, so I think avast may be the culprit. As for npsvctrig, not sure about that, but I heard it could be a battery issue. Soshould I uninstall avast and go for a different anti virus?

Not that I know of, checked speedfan and temps are average around 48-52c. As far as I know, doesnt happen immediatley after a boot up, has only happened when I was just browsing chrome or firefox. Also hows webroot as an antivirus? Came with my laptop and I'm kinda curious about it.
Edit: As of now I uninstalled avast and installed webroot in it's place. I also disabled intel display audio since I heard clashing audio drivers causes it too. I'll keep in contact if a random shutdown ever happens again..

An update on my situation. A couple days ago, I used HD tuner to help narrow down the cause and I saw there's a warning in the reallocated event count. From what I heard, it means I have to get my hdd replaced. Not sure if that was the cause of the random shutdowns or a completely different problem. But either way I need to get it fixed. Thankfully I'm under warranty and I got an RMA request in for Asus, so hope all goes well.
