A few weeks ago i went to re-set my Alienware M17X R2 to factory setting
watch as it formated and re-installed everything.
once completed it rebooted
Showing BOOTMGR is missing.
press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.

but only turns off
now I can't get back to the F8 to try and restore again.

can someone please help.
when i called Dell i was informed the warranty was expired and
they would only help me if I paid to fix it .

If you are running the 5870M graphic cards and updated the vBIOS to the latest available from Dell, restoring the image from the DVD's you received with your laptop will cause Windows to BSOD on boot.

It is always recommended to use the latest versions of the software from Dell. Failing to do so might cause serious issues with your system. eg. The Alienware Command Center flashes the AlienFX lighting control chip on every install. If you install an older version, downflashing may corrupt the AlienFX chip.

My suggestion is to forget about restoring the laptop to the factory defaults unless it has not been updated with any software/drivers at all since it was built. Install a fresh copy of Windows and install the latest version of all...

Thank you for quick reply. on boot up only the F2 & F12 keys work
the (2) disks are

1 M17x Resource DVD ( only loads Diagnostic tools)

2 Microsoft windows7 ( doesn't load or start)

so back to square one

If that doesn't work you can load disk, go into bios, and hae it set to boot of your disk drive, and after it is downloaded, go back into bios, and set it to hdd/sdd that has OS on it.
the ctrl-alt-del will always restart it unless you have the OS in the disk drive, and have it set to boot off it.

A motherboard replacement would be simplest although the most expensive option. Depending on your skillset you could try to program the AlienFX chip directly but it involves a lot more know how and as I haven't done it before I cannot provide a guide. I know there are people out there who have done exactly that though. Read the below thread, it may assist you in finding a solution.
