Sony: core i 5 4200u, GT 740m 1gb, , 500gb hard drive
-Costs £469

Lenovo: core i5 3230m, GT 635m, 1tb hard drive
-Costs £449

Will the ulv processor be too weak for gaming and general use? Which laptop should I buy out of these two?

What do you want to use for primarily?
The Lenovo will be better for gaming. The Sony may have better battery life.

I want to be able to play most modern games at low settings and playable frame rates. Battery life isn't important. Why is the Lenovo better for gaming if it has a weaker graphics card?

At a similar price point you should be able to get a better system; maybe an extra $50 (give or take). Although the 740M is better than the 635M, the U processor will bottleneck the GPU.

I haven't managed to find any better systems for a similar price point. Could you please give some examples

Look into Clevo resellers for your country. You may be able to find something a bit better for not much more money. Some of the Clevo resellers tend to sell high end systems at high premiums, but you may be able to find some of the middle-tier Clevo laptops for closer to your budget.

Examples of Clevo resellers (that I know of in Europe): Schenker notebooks, XMG, Eurocom (now defunct), and mysn.
