I am giving my current laptop to my wife and need a new gaming laptop. I am a road warrior for work, and I need my gaming fix while on trips. The laptop needs to be 5 lbs and under, because I already have my work laptop as well. Also needs to be a quad core (prefer i7, but I am willing to wait for the new A10 mobile APU if that would be a better value). Anyone have suggestions?

It seems to be a good laptop as long as it is within your budget.

Reminds of the more expensive Razer Blade 14 which attempts to put high end components into a light laptop. Of course it has a more powerful GTX 765m GPU, and I believe a slightly higher end core i7 HQ CPU, the Gigabyte laptop does cost at least $400 less than the Razer Blade 14.

If I was in the market for a light weight gaming laptop, then the $1,399 would definitely be on the list. The only thing I do not really like is the white keyboard layout.

If you really want something portable, http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=6170&review=alienware+m11x+r3

Don't bother with super cheap plastic laptops that have a very low weight as they often break. I rebuild and customize laptops so I have learned the hard way on some types of laptops. You won't find a true quad core gaming capable laptop under 5lbs as they won't make them and the only thing that comes close is the alienware m14x and it has some weight.

It is unknown when Kaveri laptops will be released. What is your budget?

I would not bother with the above recommendation for a 2011 11" Alienware laptop.

I would rather just buy a ThinkPad T440p ( and equip it with a GT 730m which is more powerful than the old GT 540m in that Alienware laptop. The T440p starts at $832, and the GT 730m is a $130 option. Expensive, but ThinkPads are rugged since they are designed to survive a 30MPH or 35MPH direct impact. It won't be very usable, but just enough to retrieve any important documents on it. It starts at 4.1bls.

In terms of performance, the nVidia GT 730m is basically equal to a the GT 645m, which in turn is a little more than halfway between the performance of the older GT 555m and GT 560m.

I'm not telling you buy the Lenovo ThinkPad T440p, but given the option of that or the old 11" Alienware laptop, it is without a doubt the T440p since the Alienware would not even be an option.

Alright let's start at the high end and work our way down from there. At $1199 excluding taxes & shipping you can get the 14" 4.4lbs MSI GE40 2OC-008US with a quad core i7-4702MQ and a GTX 760m. You get a 3% cash discount if paid by check, money order or bank wire transfer.

You can check out other laptops from XoticPC, but be aware that some of the laptops do not include an operating system in the base price. Example, the Force 1492 (GTX 760m) for $1,114 and the Sanger NP2740 for $988 (Intel Iris Pro 5200). The laptop that I linked to does include Win 8 in the base price. I know 'cause I checked.

I really like those MSI laptops. I almost bought one as a open box item on Newegg, but then it was discontinued.

How good is the GTX 760M? Like, can it play BF4 on high?

The GTX 760m is about the best performing card you will get in your price range. Plus getting a more powerful GPU will likely mean a heavier laptop due to cooling limitations.

The most powerful graphics card I have seen in a laptop that is under 5lbs is the GT 765m in the 14" Razer Blade which slightly over your budget at $2,000.
