Static noise in headphones.

My headphones are plugged directly into the back of my computer and I get a weird static noise constantly. The noise sounds a lot like a hard drive but it could be something else. It is only in my left ear and I don't know what else I can do to fix it.

do the headphones work fine on another source (phone, mp3 player, another pc, etc) ?

does another pair of headphones sound the same way on your pc?

if no to #1 and yes to #2 then likely you have sound distortion and should get a soundcard to fix

if yes to #1 and no to #2 then perhaps your headphones are shot/defective/broken.
