Question on Speakers

I've been using my PC as of late more than any other form of electronic media, and given I just picked up a Xboner for myself, I had to resort to my TV. That been said, the onboard audio of the TV is just terrible as opposed to what I'm used to. That been said, I've been wanting to get into the market of external sources, such as tower speakers, or speakers in general.

I want to space myself away from surround as much as possible given I lack the room, and aimed more towards a dual speaker set up, mostly used for movies/games.

In terms of pricing, I'd like to stick in the ballpark of 200-300$. Quality is name of the game here, I could care less about a solid bass however a noticeable presence would be greatly appreciated.
If anyone could carry any recommendations that would be fantastic, thank you.

And all that been said, if it all, would I have to purchase a receiver? I don't have one, which is a bummer.

Again, thank you.

Solution
If you want to eventually upgrade the best path would be to pick up a used or entry level surround sound receiver (you need a digital input so you can feed the TV to the receiver). An older used surround receiver without HDMI inputs would be pretty cheap. Then you could get any speakers that fit your budget and taste, new or used.
