ASUS notebook mic problem

I am experiencing an annoying issue with my ASUS X550VC-XX093 notebook.

It has a combined headphones/microphone jack and every time I plug in a pair of headphones the notebook's internal mic is disabled. I am assuming it's trying to use the headphones' mic, but the problem is they don't have one, so every time I want to go on Skype for e.g. I have to unplug them.

Is there any solution to this issue apart from buying a headset? I am running Windows 8.1 Pro.

Right click on the speaker icon in the bottom right hand corner of your desktop, and click recording devices. Then right click on the integrated mic and select "set as default device" and "set as default communication device"

Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the reply!

I've already tried this but the only recording device listed is the internal mic and it's already the default one, doesn't matter if I have the headphones plugged in or not.

I have exactly the same problem with my Asus. When I insert headphones to the combo socket, the internal mic stops working. What to do? I can't change it in settings or I don't know how to do it.

Hi all,

I was also facing this kind of a problem in mt ASUS X202E.

I tried all sorts of setting changes in Realtek HD audio manager but all in vain.

1. Next I uninstalled the software.

2. after uninstalling the software go to device manager and uninstall all the audio drivers.

3. Then windows will automatically search for drivers online and it will automatically reinstall the drivers.

4. Then plug in the headphones. Once you plug in the headphones windows will automatically install its drivers.

The main problem which I found was in the realtek HD audio manager. I uninstalled it and then headphones and internal mic can work simultaneously.

Hello! I use Windows 8.1 and this issue with the combo jack finished after updating the Operation System. They sent the package of updates in April 2014 and since then it works fine for me. Definitely, don't buy a new headset. There are other solutions for free.

I have the Asus X205T with the same issue, I have already checked for Windows updates.

I am something of a novice and can't quite follow all of your directions.
1. Uninstall Realtek Audio Manager. Can I just disable it in the Task Manager Startup menu thereby preventing it starting when booting the computer? I am concerned if there are other functions that this software performs that I might need later.
2. "uninstall all the audio drivers" in device manager.
I see two possible locations in device manager and am not sure what to uninstall:
Under Audio inputs and outputs, I see Microphone (Intel SST Audio device WDM) as well as Speakers (Intel SST Audi device WDM)
Further down the list under Sound Video and game controllers there are tow listings:
Intel SST Audi device (WDM)
Realtek I2S Audio Codec

Update: Tried just about every combination of the above and was unable to get positive results.

I also have this problem! It's as if there is no option to use an external mic. Does anyone know a fix?

Yes, there is. Two, actually. If you uninstall the Realtek drivers, Windows will install the Microsoft ones, which will detect both the jack and internal mic as a separate microphone in the Audio control panel. However, this is also true for the headphones and internal speakers, so the volume control will stop working for your headphones. If you have that nifty little subwoofer like I have with my N550JK, however, that will stop working as well...

After weeks of trying and fiddling, I FINALLY found the way to go... Install the latest Realtek drivers for HD Audio (R2.76 as of today) from here: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

After installing (And possibly rebooting) open up your Realtek HD Audio configuration panel from the Windows control panel and click the little folder icon on the top right. Make sure the checkbox is enabled before you plug in your headphones.

Plug in your headphones. Now is the fun part. It will ask you what you have connected: Either "Headphones" or "Speaker". Select "Speaker".

Headphones will give perfect sound while the internal microphone is still being active... Someone at Realtek seems to think "Headphones" and "Headset" mean the same thing.

Same issue here with X555LD...when headset/mic adapter is plugged in to combo jack, audio input is no longer possible...the internal microphone is not sensitive enough for Skype...only solution is to plug the pink microphone plug in to the jack and selecting microphone in the pop up window as connected device type...this way laptop takes voice input via the mic of the headset whilst the laptop speakers serve for the voice output...but there has got to be a solution by ASUS on this issue,a better one.I did update driver from Realtek site...current driver version on is 6.0.1.7512. OS is Win 8.1 with no pending system updates.
I would love to know if someone figured this out...!

Asus support wrote:
Single audio jack on X555L Series wont support conventional headset plugs with green/pink connectors.
They suggest the use of headsets with 4 plugs.
Or headsets with USB/WiFi connectivity.

Funny... I contacted ASUS support about my S301 not detecting any external microphones that I connect to this combined port. Whatever I plug in there, I only get the choice between loudspeakers or headphones. I've tried a separate mike and my smartphone headset: no microphones detected.

Asus support advised me to use a headset with three segments in the plug. So, how can you do mono sound in and stereo sound out with that?

I've tried USB as well: this worked but my headset caused a lot of background noise on the microphone. I've tried Bluetooth, but then you get speech-quality sound over the microphone.

I wonder if any device exsist with a microphone and stereo headphones that actually work with this combined port.
