Hi Guys,

I was wondering if you could help me out with a little repair job I'm doing at the moment. I am trying to repair an old Asus EEE PC R101 for my girlfriend before she leaves the country and I have an interesting problem.

Symptoms:
The netbook is plugged into the wall, battery removed and turned on. The blue power light on the switch comes on, a gentle hum starts, power and wi-fi lights flick on. Then nothing. No post, no fan and no HDD light. Also the power button doesn't always start the netbook, but when it does it is stable.

The same happens with battery in, however the battery light flashes red as well. The battery does charge (to begin with the netbook wouldn't start at all with the battery in and then after a while it does but the red flashing light remains)

What I have done so far:

Remove battery and try just AC
Clear CMOS (I think) by shorting two bronze terminals underneath RAM
Remove and reseat RAM
Hold power button for a minute with everything disconnected and then reconnect
Check hard drive, recognised fine in my desktop BIOS
Remove touchpad and keyboard
Connect to external monitor on startup
Press the CAPS lock button on the keyboard - no light change so apparently no power to keyboard.
Power up with just screen, motherboard, CPU and RAM
Do visual check for burns or loose connections on the motherboard, possibe weak connection on the DC input jack, but still seems connected.
Tried wiggling dc jack while plugged in, no battery, to exploit loose connection, but nothing.

I'm all out of ideas, only thought is that there is a motherboard fault somewhere not regulating power properly, The startup proceedure never really seems to start properly, could the dodgy jack be responsible for all of these problems, including the netbook not booting properly from battery? Or is it perhaps bad RAM? A new motherboard £40 but not worth the money, I'd just buy something new. Any comments or thoughts appreciated greatly!!
