Hello all,

My stereo recently went to tech heaven. Instead of just replacing the stereo i'd like to get a surround sound for my TV. How ever i'd also like the unit that i get to be able to play the music directly off my computer preferably with a wireless connection.

The TV and computer live in separate rooms, approx 10m apart.

I know very little about stereo systems and what is and isnt a quality product.

So basically i'm looking to be pointed in the correct direction for what i need to be looking for and to make sure i dont purchase something that wont fulfill my requirements.

Also my computer currently just uses the Mobo's integrated soundcard, how much of a gain would I gain from upgrading to a dedicated soundcard and if you have an opinion on those please feel free to share.

Thank you all for your time, and hope you enjoy your christmas period.

is pc streaming only for pandora? or for stored files too? if yes what are your thoughts on streaming pandora from another device instead? (such as a roku). this would eliminate the need for it to be wireless from pc-> receiver. if there are physical files on there you could use the plex software on your pc to set up a media server for roku. this would give you an easy to use remote so you dont have to walk back to your pc all the time to change channels.

and roku is $80-100 (or less depending on where you buy) it.

that leaves alot of money left for the sound system. as far as that is concerned i see you picked a soundbar. did you want one of those or would you like to have a full system? ie 5.1 surround?

do you have room for...

Budget would be around $1,000 atm.
Computer isnt always on, but if i was playing music would likely be on. I quiet like using pandora to get my music from.

Was looking at a sono's playbar, and then at a later adding some other speakers to create a surround sound.

Requirements
Wireless's access music from computer
Play sound from the tv.
Sound good ;).

Thanks

do you have room for floorstanders? or are bookshelves more your style? or if you have not much room how about satelite speakers? (basically how much "room" do you have? and do you want to look at large speakers)

Yeh basically just streaming pandora, do have some music on the HDD and movies etc.

Im in Australia, is roku an american only unit or does it work anywhere so long as you have internet.
My internet according to speedtest.net is about 3mb/s. This enough to satisfy a roku type setup?

Could i then use the roku to access all the movies on my computers harddrives?

As far as room is concerned, i have more than enough space its quiet a large room.

A 5.1 surround would be preferred.

Also since my last post I got told of my xmas bonus, so budget has grown to about 2k.
Would rather keep it lower but if there was a mark-able difference from say 1500 to 2000 i would pay the extra.

Thanks a bunch for your help.

well at least you told me you are in aus now instead of later. roku does work in other countries but it might require some setup read the link below.

honestly there are other devices which can do the same thing. what kind of "streaming" devices are popular in australia (devices which play online streams on tv)?

roku just came to mind as an easy solution. there are avrs (receivers) with the function built in however its typically not that nice and the remotes are clunky. you could also stream it via your phone (plug your phone into the receiver via 3.5mm cable) and control it via the phone however then you dont have a remote and need to walk over to your phone. you probably would need to have it plugged in too (perhaps a dock?). while a "free" solution (provided you have a receiver and sound system) it also requires you to get up. not sure if you care do respond...

if 3mbps can run pandora on pc its fine on other devices. roku says 1.5 is minimum for video 3.0 is minimum for hd video.

not sure about what particular speakers to suggest though since what is available in aus is quite different. this would involve some looking around. i really wouldnt go with a htib (home theater in a box) solution as most suck in terms of supporting many inputs and most have build quality issues (often built cheaply). a few however arent too bad...but those are diamonds in the rough.

anyways i think deciding how you want to access things comes first... then speakers can be decided on after.

It depends on just how high a quality of sound you want. Sono is great for music and the Playbar is very nice but you can add a Sonos Connect to an AV receiver and speakers. Many AV receivers will access files on your computer as well as Pandora with out Sonos but the control is not as friendly. Marantz receivers offer excellent quality of sound and the features you need. Don't know the pricing in Oz but you should be able to get quality speakers and come out where you want to be. Visit a high end audio shop. They may have some entry level gear that will come in at your price point even though they go a lot higher. Low end of high end is usually better than high end of low end when it comes to audio.
