When the battery doesn't hold the charge anymore can you just run the laptop on the mains? Someone has told me I'll burn out the circuitry. I only use it in the house anyway.

Solution
I run mine plugged in all the time (I'm too cheap to replace the battery).
I've been doing it for years and noticed no ill effects yet.
You will be fine

I agree, if the battery is dead, don't worry about it. Leaving it plugged in all the time will have minimal ill effects if the battery is already dead. The only real ill effect of leaving a laptop plugged in all the time is that it wears down the battery. And since your battery is already worn, you don't need to worry. Anyway, your laptop will be obsolete to the point where it will no longer be usable long before you will burn out the circuitry.

Yes it is perfectly fine - when the battery is full it stops sending power to the machine. This is provided you use a power supply that came with the machine or one that is designed specifically for it.
