I am trying to decide between these two laptops:

Toshiba C55-A5302 $299.99
6GB Memory - 500GB Hard Drive - Intel Pentium processor - 2.4GHz

or

Toshiba C55-A5285 $399.99
6GB Memory - 750GB Hard Drive - Intel Core i3 processor - 2.5GHz

Is the Intel Core i3 processor with 2.5GHz really worth $100 more than the Intel Pentium processor with 2.4GHz?

Solution
Well do you keep a lot of tabs open while browsing?
This is where the biggest difference will come up. CPU cores by nature can only do 1 task at a time. They do it so fast that we don't even notice really. Since we do so many things at once now, and leave so many things open its become needed to run more than 1 task at a time. Thats a big part of why we have dual core CPUs. Hyperthreading allows the CPU to do 2 things though. So your Dual core Pentium can only do two things, while the i3 can do four things.

If you keep like 8 tabs open, 3 word pads open, maybe a video, and skype you will start to see a lot more slow down with the pentium than you would with the i3.

It depends what you are doing, but the i3 will win in almost everything except price because it has newer technologies and better stuff in it.

It's not $100 for the i3, it's because you are getting 250GB more storage with the laptop as well.

In my opinion, I would go with the i3 because it is newer and faster.

The i3 system is better.

It is much more energy efficient, newer technology makes the CPU at the same clock (For example if they were both 2.4Ghz) about 5% faster. The i3 has hyperthreading which can give good boost in performance. It also has much better graphics technology.

Yeah I really just need it for graduate school. I use the internet for browsing and research and microsoft word for papers and projects... that is about it. I realize there is more storage on the i3 one but for me I don't see myself using even 500gb so that isn't too appealing to me. I am hearing the i3 is faster though, I just didn't know how much faster it would be than the pentium. Basically, if I would even notice the difference?

Thank you so much for your input. I feel like you explained it very well.. considering I don't know all that much about computers :) I think I will go with the i3.

So I was comparing more computers and came across an Acer V5-6471, Intel Core i5-3337U, with 6GB Memory, 500GB Hard Drive. How does this one compare with the Toshiba C55-A5285, Intel Core i3-3120m, with 6GB Memory, 750GB Hard Drive?

I understand that the Toshiba has more space on the hard drive but like I mentioned before, I am not sure I need that much space. I am more concerned about battery life and how fast the computer will run. Also, which brand of computer is better.. Acer or Toshiba?

I wouldn't go for the Acer if its much more. The Acer's CPU is a low power model so the battery will probably last longer. Normally it would give lower performance because the CPU runs at 1.8Ghz. However, during most processes your system will idle and run at a lower speed regardless of what system. Also when you do push it, the Acer will overclock itself up to 2.5Ghz and at this point be the equal of the i3 in the Toshiba.

If they are the same price, just based off the information posted, I would get the Acer because it will most likely give better battery life with little to no drop in performance.

If the Acer is more than $20 more expensive, I would not bother because the best performance the Acer can give is equal to the i3, and thats after it raises its power consumption to increase the speed, giving you a negligible lower power consumption when you are running intense programs, and equal if not very slightly worse performance. While not using intense programs you will using reasonably less power with the same performance.

One other thing, I just mention as a forethought. IF you are comfortable working on computers or know someone who is, I might have a laptop CPU for sell that you could buy either of those computers most likely and put in for more performance at a low price. My laptop which works perfectly fine I am thinking of upgrading the CPU is the reason I mention it.

Turns out the Acer was out of stock, but it was the same price. Oh well!
But I went to Fry's and saw a Sony that was regularly $549 for $388 and it is has a 500gb hard drive, 4gb of memory with a 1.8ghz, pdc 2117 processor. So now I am trying to decide between that one and the Toshiba with 750gb hard drive, 6gb of memory and a 2.5ghz, Intel Core i3-3120M. I will totally be girly though and say that the Sony has a backlit keyboard which I really want and the size of the computer is a 14in vs a 15.6in which I like too. I just have a bad habit of buying the cool/pretty looking one and ending up with a crappy computer (like the one I have now). So would I be making a big mistake by choosing the Sony?

Thanks so much for your help.
