First off, Thank you to anyone who takes the time to assist me in finding a solution.

I'm working on a friends Dell Inipiron 1525 Laptop and have noticed a problem with his laptop's ability to charge the battery.

I get the common "Plugged in but not charging" message when hovering over the battery indicator in the bottom right of the toolbar in Vista.

What I've done so far:

1. Laptop had major issues with outdated Windows updates so i installed them.

2. Uninstalled and reinstalled power management software

3. Tried a known working Dell adapter PA- 12 65w.

4. Checked in Bios and noticed that the AC Adapter reads unknown and battery is completely dead.

5. Researched the internet for a days on end and came back with possibly solutions such as:

(A). Buy a new battery
(B). Buy a new charger
(C). Update Bios
(D). Replace DC Jack Board
(E). Replace motherboard

Now here is why I've come here:

While looking at the current DC Jack (laptop still intact and not taken apart) and comparing to a new DC Jack Board I've noticed a difference in their appearance. The current DC Jack Board appears to have 5 gold prongs in their respected slots. I'm assuming the wrong plug was once used on this laptop and got lodged inside the slots thus rendering the system unable to be charged.

Am i correct that the Current DC Jack appears to have prongs lodged incorrectly inside?

Thank you in advance!

Solution

Depends on the manufacturer. DC jack design varies from one component producer to the next. There is usually one (or more) contact pin(s).
Well, one thing that jumps out is that there's a pretty serious crack of some kind between those USB ports and the charging port. Was it dropped somehow, perhaps while it was plugged in? It's kind of hard to see in there- if wrong plug had been jammed in there and something snapped off inside, the laptop probably wouldn't be able to run on an AC adapter at all but it sounds like it can run, but just not charge am I right?

I haven't been able to ask whether or not it was dropped, but was told that the charger he has is broken. So looking at the crack near the USB, along with the prongs inside the DC jack and a known broken charger I'm piecing together exactly what you're saying. So my guess is it was dropped and the plug of the charger broke thus keeping those prongs lodged inside the DC Jack.

The system will only operate if plugged in with an AC Adapter and the battery won't charge at all.

should the dc jack have prongs inside or should it be empty?
