ok,first things first.why do you want to downgrade an os that has less than 5 months worth of support left, when win7 is faster and (once you play with it for awhile) easier to use? but if you must go the xp route you will first need to find an iso download. its gonna have to be windows xp professional as there is no support for the other versions.once you have the iso you will have to make a bootable usb from the iso.

after that the install is pretty straightforward. one other question is what os do you have now,win7 64bit or win732 bit,and how much ram does the laptop have.other things to consider are drivers.are there winxp drivers for all your hardware? hope this helps (i still think you are opening a can of worms here).

see your point there.i would upgrade my ram ie max it out.with a 32bit system your only going to have 3 or 3.5 gigs recognized no matter how much is installed. win7 runs pretty good with that amount. being as it was on xp drivers wont be a problem.just go to the manufacturers website for your drivers.what version is your xp? the only one worth trying support wise is xp pro.
