What is speaker wire, and is it used when connecting speakers to a tv?

Speaker wire is just usually 2 core (conductor) wire that are 2 wires insulated from each other but bound together. Typically used for Right and Left channel per wire. Typically pretty small gauge, you do not need large wire (if you truly do you'll know you do).

Technically ANY wire would work, you just need a wire for each channel. It is far better for a number of reasons just to buy speaker wire.

Searching amazon for "speaker wire" returns a lot of fine results.

TV->amp->speakers.

Generally, that would be Audio OUT on the TV (red and white RCA cables), AUX (or similar) on the receiver, speaker wire to the speakers.

Since most TVs only have digital audio output the connection would be optical digital cable from TV to receiver. Then two conductior speaker wire (at least 16 guage or larger) from the receiver to the speakers. You need something like this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Denon-AVR-X500-AV-Surround-Receiver/dp/B00C7SZT2W/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1386610465&sr=8-8&keywords=av+receiver
You could also connect your sources via HDMI to the receiver and then connect the receiver with HDMI to the TV. Speakers stay connected to the receiver. You could add additional speakers for surround sound and subwoofer. Wharfedale has them to match.

To answer your question honestly we would need to know what outputs your TV has. TV make and model # would be enough.
It may have a speaker out, therefore you would not need a receiver/amplifier, or maybe it doesn't and you will need one.

Example: my TV is a little older and has both speaker out (no amp needed) and digital out for a receiver/amp, I use a receiver for the surround sound and sub woofer.

At that point you need to decide, surround sound, 4.1, 5.1, 6.1, 7.1?

So, your connections are:
Input&Output:

Component In (Y / Pb / Pr) x 1 ea
Composite In (AV) x 1 (Common Use for Component Y) ea
Digital Audio Out (Optical) x 1 ea
HDMI x 2 ea
RF In (Terrestrial / Cable Input) x 1 ea
USB x 1 ea
Headphone x 1 ea
Scart x 1 ea
CI Slot x 1 ea

The digital optical out to the receiver, then speaker wire to the speakers.
