Old Audio system to HDTV

Solution
You would add a surround sound receiver. Connect the cable box and dvd to the receiver (usually with HDMI cables). Connect the HDMI out of the receiver to the TV. The receiver will have L/R front, center, and L/R rear speaker connections. Connect the speakers that flank the TV to the fronts, the other pair probably to the rears. Depends on how the speakers are laid out in relation to the TV.

What powers the speakers? The DVD player?

Are you trying to get audio OUT from the TV speakers? Or audio OUT from the cable box to the existing speakers?
Still not entirely sure what you're trying to do here.

Me either :) . Just bought a house that has 4 speakers built in to the wall. I have the two sets of wires comign from the speaker out through the wall. I assume I can hook them to something so the sound from my tv will play through them, sort of like surround sound. I am unsure how to hook the cables up or what to hook them up, as the wires don't have plugs just frayed wires.

You can connect the wires to a receiver or amp (if you have a separate amp and preamp). As for the frayed wires, you would need to extend those with more wire, and there are various methods and materials you can purchase to join the wireless together, such as solder, butt connectors, crimp connectors, etc. While checking your connections and making sure everything actually works, simply twisting the ends together and insulating with electrical tape would suffice. Be sure to maintain consistent polarity (positive/negative). Typically red is positive, black is negative, so keep that in mind when you extend the loose wires and connect them to your receiver/amp.
