So my current laptop that has an AMD A6 processor isn't performing well for me. It used to when I did simple stuff, but I started getting into more demanding things like graphic design, basic video editing, programming, and LOTS of multiple internet tabs. Note that I have my laptop setup on my desk connected to a 24" monitor with keyboard and mouse.

So I've narrowed my results to these two laptops:

The first is a 17" inch and the second is 15". 1st has: i5-3230m @2.6 GHz dual core (with hyperthreading) processor, 8GB RAM, 1 TB, Intel HD Graphics 4000. $535

2nd has: i7-4700MQ processor @2.4 GHz quad core (with hyperthreading) processor, 12GB RAM, 1 TB, Intel Graphics 4600. $650 ($600 after $50 rebate)

Which one should I get? I prefer a 17" screen because I don't take my laptop around with me so I could use extra screen size. The 15" one is such a good deal though since it has an i7 and 12 GB RAM.

But will I even need an i7 processor? Will the i5 work fine for what I do daily? I don't want to spend $100 more for a laptop that won't perform better for me... I'm not sure which one I should buy, cause I love the 17" screen size, but it would be nice to have extra power with the i7.... Anyways, my final budget is $650.

P.S- I don't care about the Intel Graphics. I barely game, it doesn't matter.

Because
1- I like disconnecting my laptop sometimes and go to a different part of my house. I also take it a lot to my cousin's house.

2- I like having 2 screens (monitor and laptop). Two screens on a desktop cost too much.

Is it possible to build a desktop as powerful as the 2nd laptop for less? And 2 screens?
