Got my new laptop yesterday. Asus N56JR S4044. As requested, without operating system.

When I started the thing up, up pops a Free Dos program and before I realize what is happening this gets installed on my laptop. In addition,or as result, I have a 680 Gb Partition with something on it - presumably Free Dos, with message including the phrase . Not accessible for Windows installation.

So after checking internet and a nephew working with pc's as software - network security specialist, I delete all partitions and start install W7 on this laptop. No problem ..... eh, that is, upon checking the device manager shows all controllers and PCI device (in total 7 devices) as "others" without functional drivers. The display adapters only show the Standard VGA Graphics adapter, nothing else, certainly not the NVIDEA GTX 760M.

Asus website: fill OS please. Two options: W8 and others. Under others are only the manuals and some bios stuff, no drivers at all!!!!.

Calling the Asus hotline. Reply: oh, eh, a, not windows 8, go into internet and try download drivers of each device individually, but don't use the Asus website because we ONLY have drivers for W8.

Am I crazy here or what?

I talked with the Dutch Asus people to get a bit better picture. They agree that they simple do NOT have any drivers or give any support for drivers other than W8. Backward compatibility or ..nix-like OS: no dice no drivers. Without the drivers I cannot connect to internet so I cannot let windows 7 find a solution or look for updates. Catch 22.

You think reinstalling W7 can add something?

Another problem seems to be with the NVIDIA driver. The most current one, GeForce R331 Game Ready Driver, states "Notebooks supporting Hybrid Power technology are not supported (NVIDIA Optimus technology is supported)."

And my nice new Asus mentions "ASUS Super Hybrid Engine II".

Up the creek here completely or what.

I can buy W8, but that would defy the whole idea.

The thing is, I use a lot of programs like Adobe premiere pro, indesign, dreamweaver, word, and excel on a desktop or a desktop replacing laptop (like this one just bought). In the same way, I use my mobile phone to make calls or very very occasionally playing very stupid simple games or spur of the moment pics. Ditto I do not want to use cloud based programs or as storage: don't trust is privacy and more important its up-time accessibility in rural surroundings. I am very happy with local storage on a traditional desktop or laptop. For fun on the road and demonstrations we bought an iPad Air at the same time as the Asus laptop.

With other words, I do not need a desktop or big laptop without touch screen trying to play for tablet or mobile phone. W7 pro is perfect for what I need and I have licenses for it, and for Office. W8 does not offer any advantages for me, only disadvantages and I do not need or want it (end of rant).

Question now is can I get thinks working properly with W7 pro or am I stuck with either running W8 or returning the laptop all together and go for a different new type / brand that still supports W7.

I'm not surprised that Asus doesn't support an older operating system for what would be sold as a native windows 8 machine. That's like being upset that they don't have Vista drivers :)

No problem though, you should be able to find the missing drivers for windows 7. All the hardware that is missing, each one has a (fairly) unique Hardware ID that you can use to locate the correct Win 7 driver.

Locate any unknown device in Device Manager, and right click -> 'Properties'
Click the 'Details' Tab, Look for the 'Property' drop down menu and select 'Hardware Ids'
You'll see something like this:

PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8136&SUBSYS_2A59103C&REV_01
PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8136&SUBSYS_2A59103C
PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8136&CC_020000
PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8136&CC_0200

The VEN is for vendor, or manufacturer. The DEV is the device. If you search google for these like this:

"10EC 8136", or "10EC 8136 driver"

For example, this is a Realtek RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller.

The same components get used by many different laptop brands and models, many times you can find a compatible driver from a competitors website, or find a thread where someone else has has already found what your looking for!

You'll be able to identify the specific hardware manufacturer and the component (and therefore the driver) for the operating system your looking for. There are some exceptions to this rule, but this should help you find 90% of the drivers you need.

There are some oddities that require a bit more research to find, but they're all out there on the interwebs somewhere.

Ratedk, that was a great solution, finding drivers now and installing them. Did not get all the drivers yet and am still waiting for an answer from NVIDIA. At least I am connected to internet now and installing updates. Hopefully, I will get everything to work properly.

Got two similar answers from ASUS: your bad luck: not our problem bye bye. To expand a bit; the ASUS N56 series now has 8 major groups identified by the two letters behind the N56. Each group has numerous variations in CPU, GPU, RAM, HDD etc. Of the eight groups, four support W8 + W8.1, two support W8 + W8.1 +W7, one supports W8 + W7 and one, the N56JR supports ONLY W8. My bad: off course I bought a N56JR. According ASUS, it is my own mistake that I did not check driver availability for all 363 laptops in my budget range.

AS to your wink, I compare the release success of W8 with VISTA. Whatever.

I included the device codes and drivers, maybe somebody can use it.

In looking for the SM Bus Controller, I found this from Intel... but it's labeled as the USB Controller. It may solve them both!

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=22824

You'll have to confirm, but I think yours is a 4th Generation Intel Processor. Start -> Right Click Computer -> Properties. Look up the Processor:

In regards to NVidia, I found this forum that solved the same GTX 760M *might* provide a solution..

It's difficult dealing with laptops from ASUS, Samsung, and Sony. Their model nomenclature is all f'd up, compared to an HP, Dell or say Gateway. I equate it to trying to read hieroglyphics. Which makes identifying parts much more difficult.

Thank goodness for the software that helps identify components in a civilized manner :)

Windows 8 initially failed, mainly, because they took away the start button that has been around since the beginning of Windows back in 1995. People are used to it & they don't like change. The 8.1 update gives users the start button back, but it still doesn't function the same way it used to. There's a little (free to donate) program called "Classic Shell" www.classicshell.net that, in my experience, has allowed people to like and stick with Win8. I honestly think Microsoft should buy the code and integrate it into a future windows update.

I think I tried that one before. I downloaded and unpacked again and ran setup.exe. Error message "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software". I do have a Haswell i7 4700HQ CPU so I am not sure what is blocking installation. Could only copying drivers work?

forum.notebookreview.com was down this morning, will try again later today.

Concur on that one. I mainly stay away from W8 because I am not into social networks, cloud, youtube etc but into video-editing and design work (not really professional, but learning) with two screens and switching between programs regularly; demanding desktop work. So W7 is working OK but I am not sure about W8 would be so smooth. The other problem, I don't have W8 or W8.1, and this laptop ONLY supports W8, not W7 neither W8.1! How is that for a sick joke

For the USB/SM Bus download, the zip file contains a Drivers folder, so you could try to update the driver from Device Manager. Choose the "Browse my computer for driver software" option, and direct it to the unzipped folder. It may just be a dead end, but we won't know until you try *shrug*

Thanks to driveridentifier, I got the USB driver, so now the only one missing as unknown device is the SM bus controller. Deviceidentifier found a driver for the SMBus but that ended up in installing the asus smart gesture driver. Whatever.

I checked all devices again. The Bluetooth device is now mentioned as generic Bluetooth adapter but it must be an Intel Bluetooth device. I thought it was OK before, but I am not sure. Can installing the driver for the Intel wireless card or the USB-3 driver throw out the Bluetooth driver? Regardless, the device ID is 8087-07dc. I got the driver through Intel download center and now that one is mentioned as Intel also.

The display adapter is also generic, ID is again Intel 0416, which is Intel HD 4600. Downloaded the ....exe file for end users and installed. After restart, I needed a magnifying glass to see the icons so it installed OK. Monitor is still generic PNP monitor but that is probably OK.

So summarizing, I now have all the drivers with exception of the SMbus controller.

This is old, but I found it while looking for answers. Getting all of the problems to disappear in Device Manager is not enough to actually get everything working.

For anyone who might see this later, this is how I got everything to work.

I installed 64 bit Windows 7 pro from a CD, and then I followed the advice given in this topic and downloaded all of the most recent drivers from the second link as suggested.

I followed the first link almost to the letter starting with the drivers section, and everything is working now. I installed the ATK package before the touchpad gesture driver as suggested on the Asus site, however. I also skipped 12 through 21 (except for ATK). Based on Googling their names, all of the things after the card reader (10) are Asus software that you don't really need. The ATK is needed for backlit keys and the popup notifications when you change settings with the function keys. I'm considering removing the touchpad driver, because that alone runs 5 processes constantly. I assume that would cause a loss of multi-finger scroll/zoom.

The NVIDIA geforce gtx 760m card clearly works if I set it as the default card in Nvidia settings as suggested in the link even though it does not show up in Dxdiag. However it is a bit louder than the Intel gpu. I will leave the gpu setting on automatic selection (to decrease noise), but I am not sure if that setting fully utilizes both cards based on GPU-Z sensors during the render test. Either way, you can clearly force use of the card in Nvidia settings if the automatic selection does not kick in when desired.

I hate unfinished treads, so an update on this. I could get everything to work early 2014 even without the SM bus controller, with exception of the graphic card. No functional driver, not even through NVIDIA. Neither the Intel search driver nor the NVIDIA update sites recognized the laptop.

Since we are a non-profit with several older computers and laptops, I left the thing laying around while communicating with Asus about this for months. Did not go anywhere.

In October, I tried again and found out that Asus now has W8.1 support for this laptop as well. Who knows, lets try again. I started up (still the initially installed W7 Pro and let Intel do an update and then use the NVIDIA site to get an update on the graphic card.

Lo and behold, both now jumped to the task and a few hours updating and restarting later, everything worked OK! The lacking SM bus controller is still lacking but does not seem to pose a problem. Only the extra sound woofer does not work, no time to go deep into that yet.

Summarizing, I now have a functional N56JR running W7 and finally are happy with it, no thanks to Asus or NVIDIA on this; it took over a year after the laptop's release before they got something working for it.
