Laptop fan not working,Overheating

Hi,
I have a Dell N4010 and its fan has stopped working, i know best bet is to get it repaired but i cant afford it for now so i wanted to know how well will a external fan perform? thinking to buy one as they are pretty cheap. I am just a casual user using skype,facebook,movies etc
