Possible to use a 7.1 headset on a 5.1 audio card?

Title pretty much says it all. I have an Asus Xonar DG 5.1 audio card in my computer, and I want to try out a surround sound headset, but the only problem is the vast majority of gaming headsets are 7.1, and the few that are 5.1 are either absurdly overpriced, have relatively bad reviews, aren't available in my country (would have to get them shipped to Canada from the US, and international shipping on electronics tends to be rather expensive) or just aren't very pretty to look at. So what I want to know is whether or not it's possible to use a 7.1 headset on a piece of hardware that only supports 5.1? Naturally, I would assume it would work, but the extra channels wouldn't be used, but can someone give me more detail? I saw a pretty good deal on a 7.1 Razer Kraken headset (Black Friday and all), but I don't want to buy something that might not work with my setup.

I believe the Kraken is a USB type, and doesn't use your sound card at all, instead uses it's own internal sound card. If you wanted to hook into your sound card, you'd need to get an analog type headset like the razer tiamat.

So I can plug the 7.1 Kraken into, say, one of my frontal USB ports and it'll work just fine? The sound card is more for my speakers because I wanted sharper audio when I didn't feel like using my headset, but i didn't notice it used USB in the tech specs.

I have a razer tiamat 7.1 and I was wondering will it work with a 5.1 channel integrated sound card(gigabyte g1 sniper). off topic question is the motherboard sli ready?

It might depend on what Sniper board you have but all look good for SLI.

The razer's will work with 5.1 if the board has only front/center/sub/rear outputs. You wont be able to plug in the sides but not really a a big deal anyways when you use headphones.
