Can I upgrade it to a blue ray player, and if so which one would you guys recommend?

Hi, from the specifications on the Asus site, you can't upgrade to a Blue ray player, but you could add one externally on the USB port.

Can you recommend me an external blue ray player that I can bring on an airplane. I am from Toronto, Ontario Canada

I just bought this one a few weeks ago. Its great because it works with USB 2.0, 3.0 and it also gets its power from the USB port, no other power cable needed. This also comes with Power DVD.

Edit: Its also the smallest external blu-ray player I found.

The Blu-ray PinchedNerve suggest is a good one, I found two drives, but they were not compatible with Windows 8.
