I have an LG 47" Smart TV, and I use Playstation Media Server and Plex via the Network feature of the TV. So my movies stream that way.

I recently got a Denon AVR-X1000 and this is a great receiver BUT I can't figure out how to get the audio signal to the reciver when playing movies via my smart TV.

just so you know. The Receiver is connected to the TV via HDMI cable, and I also tried using a Digital Optical cable and plugging that from the TV to the Receiver but still no sound.

I'm pretty stumped on what im doing wrong and it's probably simple. Can anyone help out?

Solution
The HDMI cable should work if your TV has the Audio Return Channel function and it is turned on in both the receiver and TV. If you want to use the optical connection make sure that you assign that optical input to the source you want to associate it (such as TV) with in the receiver input set up menu.

I did your second option. And then I assigned it to it's own connection "TV". That didn't work.

How do I turn on ARC? I know my TV and receiver supports it I don't know how to turn it on? Figured it was on by default
