Buying New HDTV LED

Hey Tech Friends!

I'm in the new market for buying HDTV. I'm building a new PC for entertainment and I'll be purchasing both the PS4 and Xbone. And well I think the superbowl party might be at our place this year so you know gotta have the game looking good. Anyhow I've been eyeing a couple TV's made by Samsung, LG, Vizio . I've been eyeing one in particular and it's a Samsung LED 55 Smart TV

Anyhow I was looking at it and it's on sale for 1599.00 down from 2000.00 I'm wondering if I should wait for BF maybe the price will come down more or I'll have another chance at this sale price.

As far as price and features goes. I'd like to spend 1000.00 bucks but I know this is a good tv. So I'd be willing to stretch a little.

I'd like something thats 50-60 incs
with 240hz. Any how does anyone have any advice for suggestions?

240hz doesnt play so nice with games. you will need to run those in 60hz mode (typically called game mode) but the trouble is that this doesnt always work and whether it works or not can vary from model to model even within the same brand. if you try to play at 240hz you can see noticible lag due to the tv processing in extra frames (it fakes them in). while a slight delay doesnt matter for streaming tv and can make the picture look smoother it has complications when you control the input (gaming).

brand preference in order i would say is sony, samsung and lg. vizio is a disposable brand..

do you need a smart tv? if you plan on hooking it up to a pc anyways i would think not (since a pc does the same thing but better). you can save by not going with this feature. the trouble is that they throw it in on most higher end tvs.

you might also want to look for zone backlighting (where leds are arranged in a grid behind the tv) since it gives better contrast. the only problem is that a few years ago it was a top-end only option so i'm not sure if it is or is not available in your budget range yet.

not sure if the tv will drop more than 21% off but i cant see it dropping too much more unless it was some kind of special promotion.

Hmm I didn't think about that...Well we have Directtv and we do use hulu plus. I've played with the smart tv functions and it's pretty cool. Besides the misses always leaves the PS3 on after she's used netflix and or hulu. I think it's a feature she would enjoy. Also 204hz I thought would be good because we watch a lot of movies and I do enjoy my HD sports. Another TV I saw was this also this samsung

I think the only difference is that this one doesn't have 3D. Which again I wouldn't mind having all the bells and whistles. But is anyone really using 3D tech at home?

Also I heard Vizio brands were also really good. Realistically my price range is $700-$1650 is what I looking to spend. Any TV you can recommend?

you do not need 3d unless you plan on using it. it looks like crap anyways (looks like paper moving over paper to me).

there are quite a few good reviews for vizio but most of them havent had to deal with the company directly, havent had the television for very long or look to have been paid (ie fake reviewers). the general consensus i seem to get is that dealing with vizio for any reason such as a warranty issue can be "painful" as they are very rude, not very prompt and can harrass you with phone calls and threats when the problem exists on their end not yours.

ordered from them in mid-March. They shipped it FedEx, pretty late. Had to take the day off from work to take delivery. So far, ok, if annoying. Then, because of their crappy packaging material, the TV is broken on delivery. Now the nightmare starts in full: it took me at least 3-4 calls to find someone who could figure out what to do for me to get a replacement. Their people are not the brightest, to say the least.

Then THEY started calling ME: "Why are we sending you a new TV?" "We don't see you in our system." "Where are you in our system" (Yeah. They kept demanding I tell them where I was in Their system). I tried to get them to tell me how to send back the old, broken TV. Noone could tell with any certainty or clarity. One of their guys could barely speak English. But I was finally promised a "return label" in the new TV's package, which I could use to send back the old one.

And yet it got even worse: on the day the new one arrived, I had to take a day off from work again for this delivery. Now UPS had the unfortunate task of delivering for these idiots. Of course, the return label was NOT provided as promised. At this point I'm so angry I can barely stand up straight. I've been on the phone with their rude nasty people at least a dozen times, EACH TIME being interrogated as to exactly where "I was" in their broken system. So after more calls, finally a manager calls me. And says someone will pick up the old broken TV that day. This is the first person at the company who seemed like she had a brain above the reptilian level. An actual human being. Wow. At Vizio. She is truly the exception.

The clicher: today, MORE THAN 10 DAYS AFTER I THOUGHT THIS NIGHTMARE WAS FINALLY OVER (!!!) some cretin "customer service manager" named "Donovan" or whatever (who had the nerve to tell me she did not HAVE a supervisor or manager, apparently she thought I would believe she reported straight to the president - "and he's in Taiwan a lot" she helpfully informed me - nice tidbit, huh?). She begins to AGAIN interrogate me as to where I was in their system, and threatened me that they would charge my credit card for another TV, or repossess their old one, if I did not cooperate.

Un-believable! Just incredible. At this point, the modest savings of a couple of hundred bucks earned by buying Vizio were more than outweighted by the lost time and aggravation.

Do yourself a HUGE favor and DO NOT deal with these clowns.

I'm forced to agree with erobak and altr0s. My set is only 5 months old, and it already died on me. VIZIO service won't be able to send someone for a full week from the date I called. That's acceptable service to them, I guess.

Yes, the price of these LCD HDTVs is relatively low, but what good is a low price if you need to replace the set after a year or two? As it is, I'm stuck with a $550.00 lemon that'll probably need replacing before it's two years old.

Do your homework before buying a VIZIO. I didn't, and now I'm gonna pay for my carelessness.

personally i prefer my sony televisions. you can actually get parts for them easily as well. samsungs are also not bad and if i needed a third choice it would be lg as i stated before in my prior post.

as far as models... since i use consoles and a pc with it i prefer barebones 60hz models so i dont have to worry about problems. not sure this is what you are looking for though which is why i let you know about game mode and let you know that you need to check to see if it works on the particular models you want.

Yes, the next best thing to do in a home theater setup. I'm guessing you've already figured out about the possiblities of an appropriate home theater seating to go along with it.

lg isnt a bad brand. my cousin is an ex tv repair tech and that is the brand that he personally chooses to use.

the first thing i would check is to see if 60hz game mode works. if it does then likey you are set.

So far the TV isn't bad at all obviously there are a few things I have a problem with and it's the apps that are available in the play store and I'm very confused about how TV resolution works.

I upset that hulu plus isn't available on the in the play store which is very weird. Also the screen refresh or resolution. So I was using amazon instant movie app on the tv. And I was watching the avengers the screen quality was really good but I felt it should have been better so I booted up my ps3 and used the amazon app via the PS3 and the screen difference was dramatically different. Like it was more fluid and little faster.

I think someone said that was like the refresh rate. Would you know why this is different?

the one source may have been HD the other may not have been HD.

for example netflix on the ps3 supported HD while the pc version of netflix did not.

perhaps the tv hardware has trouble with streaming and is showing some lag. the ps3 is much faster and has zero trouble streaming.

perhaps using the tvs own apps you arent getting 240hz (or whatever the tv is) as output but via the ps3 you are. not sure but wouldnt suprise me. hardware can be strange like that.

Yes, the refresh rate might be different via the TV to the PS3.
