Laptop lid will not close and allow my monitor to work

I have a Packard Bell laptop which is connected to an external monitor. I'd like to be able to close the lid on my laptop so I have more space on my desk at work but I cannot do this is my monitor shuts down too. How can I solve this?

If you are extending the desktop set your monitor as primary display. Then in the power settings change the "on closing lid" parameter as "do nothing", should work fine.
