Broken laptop screen, won't connect to an external monitor!?

I completely broke my LED laptop screen a few months ago. The entire thing just went white. It finally came to me yesterday that I could just connect it to an external monitor via a VGA chord. So I did that, and it worked. However, I then decided my laptop was too cluttered and full of apps and things that I didn't need, and I decided to factory reset it. I didn't know that the external monitor wouldn't work until the log-in screen. So now, given that the computer needs re-set-up and has yet no log in screen, the external monitor won't work. Is there anything I can do, I don't have the money to get it fixed or get a new laptop. Is it possible to take it apart and some how rebuild it so that it thinks the external monitor is the default screen?
I have an HP envy M6, if that means anything.
And I tried the FnF4, which didn't work.

The easiest way around this is to find a laptop or even a desktop that you can use to transplant the hard drive into and run the startup process to completion then put it back in the original computer, it sounds more complicated than it actually is. The only issue you may run into is a notification from windows that the system is running an OEM version of the operating system which isn't for the current hardware set but that problem should be alleviated when you put it back in the correct machine

As for Pones
I recently had a similar issue with a Sony laptop of my sisters, it turned out that the display wasn't getting the chance to work because the OS wasn't booting, it was attempting a scan on startup. Pressing escape a few times after startup allowed it to boot and the hdmi automatically mirrored the displays after that. Hope this helps
