I will be using this laptop for a vast majority of the time for school. I will be using it for mild gaming only when on a trip or at a friends house. Do I really need a dedicated GPU or will an I5 or I7 be enough

Like said before, it depends on what you play, with the idea that the really fancy games need the appropriately fancy hardware.

If you want a bit of a reference point, my 4670k desktop cpu's integrated graphics could play SWTOR on medium settings without any hiccups whatsoever (i didnt experiment any higher as this was only a temporary fix until i got my graphics card).
If you get a laptop with a generation similar to this one (so a 4xxx series cpu), then it is probably safe to assume that it can play similar games at similar settings (although checking never hurts). Look for something with HD 4600 graphics if you want to use the cpu graphics. Having 8 gb ram is probably also a good idea

It isn't how often you game, but what games you play that determines what if any GPU you need. The latest intel graphics is quite capable at low to medium settings on many games. But the big blockbuster titles will need a dedicated GPU.
