Hi all,

I have done a bunch of searching but I am quickly becoming overwhelmed and I am still quite confused.

I have a new HTPC built with a MSI FM2-A75MA-E35 motherboard using onboard graphics and sound, out via HDMI to an Onkyo TX-NR616 which then sends the signal to a Samsung 60" 1080 TV.

When using XBMC, audio files with DTS encoding play fine but files with "aac 5.1" encoding only show up on the receiver as "PCM".

Can someone explain if this is right? How do I get Dolby Digital to my speakers?

I do have XBMC (Frodo) outputting HDMI sound. Also Windows 7 is set to HDMI 7.1 output under Playback Devices.

Can anyone direct me to somewhere that explains all of this?

Thanks for all your help.

I solved this in a strange way.

In XBMC under audio setting, select coaxial/optical as your output (even though you are using HDMI for the physical connection).

With this setting, it activates XBMC's onboard AAC to AC3 converter fixing the issue.
