Replaced toshiba hard drive with an acer. I have the windows software in the drive. I follow the prompts for recovery, recommend but then get an error code: 05-0172-045D. Help.

Solution
From the error code (05-0172-045D) it seem that the HDD is defective, I found other users with the same problem with a Toshiba. So you will need a new HDD.

I read where you can do a dell, so is that possible? If so why doesn't the acer work? I thought I could completely erase the hard drive and reload the windows 7 that I got from toshiba. Just wondering .

You could use the Acer HDD drive but you have to reformat the HDD with a new OS, the one who was install in the Toshiba laptop. If you want to buy an SSD, you could use an USB flash drive to install the OS. After, you go to Toshiba's site to get all the drivers for your laptop. With every drivers installed, you can use the key underneath the laptop to register the OS.

So I hate to be a burden but I think the acer Hdd is bad. So this is what's happening: I follow the instructions: place the # 1 disc in the drive, power up the computer holding down the C key, release the C key when the screen reads Toshiba. It says the computer will format the hard drive and install the factory image. Follow all instructions on the screen. Once the process is complete, remove the recovery media and press Amy key to restart your computer. So I do this and the first prompt is "Selecting a process" I have two choices, TOSHIBA recovery Wizard is the default, so I left it at that. I clicked next and I get the WARNING ABOUT everything being rewritten. So I click yes. Next is the defaulted choice of ," Recovery of factory default software ( recover to out- of - box state) I left it at that and clicked next. After that I get this; ERROR: 05-0172-045D
An error has occurred. Please press (OK) to turn off the computer. So I press ok and the computer appears to turn off for a split second and then repeats the entire process . Do you think this hard drive is bad too? It came out of an acer with a cracked screen from bring dropped.
