Hey this just happened once on me but I got a battery off Amazon and its only happened once but as It was discharging off the power from 100% I started playing World of warcraft and when battery hit 9% It started flashing orange and white I plugged in charger and it says not charging it shut down and gave me message your battery is overheating I wasn't sure why can anyone explain this and how to prevent it from happening again? Is it wrong to discharge battery on a video game?

Battery info is 9Cell 90whr typical last value is 7 hours of none use and almost 4 hours of video use, off the power supply.

Solution
I just replied to another post and I am copying from my post.

"Lithium batteries should not be run down to a 'flat' condition. Flattening these batteries will drastically reduce its life. The recommendation that I have seen is that they should not be run down to below 40% of charge. Also, keeping it plugged in and charging after it has attained 100% charge and the laptop is not turned ON is not a good idea.....

...... I am aware of the fact that poorly built Lithium batteries could have a fire hazard problem......."

I strongly suggest that you do NOT use this battery any longer. It is defective. Try and RMA it and get a replacement.

The 4-hour life for the 9-cell battery is probably under ideal conditions where the Power settings are maximized for battery life and not for computer performance.

Should I really send it back? That overheat symbol on laptop only happened once to me but If you really recommend I send it back I got no problems with that. Thanks for the solution.

I am really concerned about the overheating leading to fire. This has happened to some laptop batteries and also to the Lithium batteries on recent aircraft.
