I haven't been able to open any office 2010 application in days - it was working just fine on my window 7 home premium laptop.

Thanks for your help. I already ran a checkdisk, though I couldn't find the log for it in the event view, so I don't know if it found anything I also tried to repair - I found the link you posted above and did what it suggested. Still no luck opening any office program after the reboot.

Maybe some other info will help you, since this is not the only issue on my computer. According to event viewer, there are many errors upon start up - the source is bootshieldsvc, event code 256. Here are the details:
Log Name: Application
Source: BootShieldSvc
Date: 10/5/2013 8:47:15 AM
Event ID: 256
Task Category: None
Level: Error
Keywords: Classic
User: N/A
Computer: Dianne-PC
Description:
An error has occurred (---query FLAG_AUTO_SVC_CHANGED key success failed with 1, The Code is:0x424.).
Event Xml:
<Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event">
<System>
<Provider Name="BootShieldSvc" />
<EventID Qualifiers="49154">256</EventID>
<Level>2</Level>
<Task>0</Task>
<Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords>
<TimeCreated SystemTime="2013-10-05T12:47:15.000000000Z" />
<EventRecordID>45420</EventRecordID>
<Channel>Application</Channel>
<Computer>Dianne-PC</Computer>

</System>
<EventData>
<Data>BootShieldSvc</Data>
<Data>---query FLAG_AUTO_SVC_CHANGED key success failed with 1, The Code is:0x424.</Data>
</EventData>
</Event>

I get 3 error messages on start-up that I need to click out of: verifyhost.exe and lenovoreg.exe and sacpl.exe - they all say application error, unable to start correctly.

Another issue I find in event viewer is event id 1001, source Dhcp-client address configuration state event. Here are those details:
Log Name: Application
Source: BootShieldSvc
Date: 10/5/2013 8:47:15 AM
Event ID: 256
Task Category: None
Level: Error
Keywords: Classic
User: N/A
Computer: Dianne-PC

</EventData>
</Event>

Any other thoughts, since I've already tried what you suggested?
