Hi Folks,

I wonder if anyone could help with a problem I'm having with a Toshiba Satellite Pro C850 laptop. I bought two last year and one of them has started playing up recently. At random times the screen will go black. The laptop is still running as I can hear the audio. I've tried doing a hard reset, which I thought had worked, but it's started to do it again. I've also changed the power management options several times but regardless of the settings, the same thing happens. If anyone could shed some light on this or has any suggestions, I'd be most grateful.

Many thanks.

If you have a separate monitor, try running from the vga out on the laptop to that monitor. If that works without issue (ruling out gpu/igpu issues), your problem will probably be either the ccfl/inverter or the laptop screen itself.

Post back with results and we will move forward from there.

To check and see if it's the inverter, boot and wait till the screen goes black. Turn of the lights in the room and check for any "glow" around the edges of the screen. If you see the backlight "glow", chances are the screen is bad or the connector cable is loose. If there is no "glow", take a flashlight and shine obliquely across screen. If you can see text or login, the inverter is bad.

Easiest solution is to replace the screen and inverter in one piece. Aftermarket screens with inverters are available and the replacement process is pretty easy. Google your model and screen replacement.
