A dropped laptop not working could be a host of things.
Corrupt OS
Damaged HDD
Loose or broken connection
Cracked motherboard
This would be tough to guide a rookie through.
Was it running when it was dropped?

As a start, to rule out other things, I'd try booting into a Linux LiveCD. Not to install or anything, but rather just to rule out any issues other than the hard drive.
LinuxMint or Ubuntu. Burn those images to a DVD, and boot from that. If it works, then you probably have a hard drive issue.
If it doesn't boot, then something else is wrong.
