Solution
on desktop playing music/videos/streams only the stereo speakers will play the audio by default because the music only has stereo chanels encoded, you either need to look in your audio control panel for a strereo up conversion option or use a stereo up conversion plugin or dsp in your music player.

It doesn't work in games either though even when I have them set to 5.1? Or does that come under your solution above as well? So bassically I need a plug in for playing 5.1 in games as well, I've had 5.1 speakers before and never had this sort of problem! Though I was using xp back then. So whats the name of the drivers i'd be looking for?
