I have an old iomega media player so the video quality is not the best plus it doesn't support mkv files. I would like to find a new way of watching my movies and series and I've been contemplating two options. The first would be get a new HD media player that supports mkv (I was thinking the WDTV live hub) . I have a macbook air so I was wondering how the video quality would be if I got the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter. This option would be cheaper and more convienient. Is this a good option or would I be loosing a lot of video quality?

You shouldn't be losing video quality with an adapter like that. But, keeping track of that adapter and leaving that cable becomes annoying after a while. Have you considered an Apple TV? That would let you mirror your laptop display to your TV, plus it has other streaming services like netflix and hulu.
