I have my computer with a nice sound card in one room but a 5.1 Home Theater system in another room. I'm wondering if when you network your music, such as from Windows Media to the Xbox does your sound card still process the sound and thus provide benefit or does the Xbox have its' own sound processing and just read the file directly. If this is the case, what is a good receiver that I can network my music to while retaining the benefits of my computer's sound card?
As you already guessed, the xbox is directly reads the music on your computer and outputs it through its own soundcard. So your PC sound card is completely bypassed.
Im not sure about good receivers, but you would most likely need to run a long digital COAX cable and have a converter to optical near the receiver and sound card. If the distance between your PC and Home theater is not too much, you can try running just an optical line.
Don't use RCA cables. They are not strong enough.
