Would like a laptop except for the keyboard: tablet as a costume-made laptop?

I'm going to college this fall and I'll need a portable pc - but I've never liked those flat laptop keyboards, and I'm going to be writing a lot so this is important. I'm a good typist, but I need a full-blown desktop-pc keyboard in order to type fast and with little misprints the way I enjoy. Seems wasteful to connect (as I've been doing) an external keyboard to a laptop, and have the laptop's keyboard just sit there taking space.

So I was thinking, maybe I can customize my own "laptop" by buying a powerful tablet with complete "real"-pc-potential, and then shop for a good keyboard & mouse to connect to the tablet via usb / bluetuth.

Since this will be my only computer, I need to think this through. I need to be able to use it comfortably for writing in office word, surfing the internet, streaming videos, watching movies, printing documents, using software such as torrent and photoshop, transfering ebooks to my Kindle, downloading photos from a digital camera, etc. (everything except gaming, I guess).

So the question is, are we really there, tablet-technology-wise, or is this premature? Are there really tablets out there that fit my "laptop" building scheme (in terms of ports, features, operating system, etc.) or will I end up with a limited hybrid that won't satisfy my aforementioned needs?

Thanks

In short NO, just because you loose the keyboard will no make it cheaper but rather more expensive.

the thing is that a thin device like a tablet can only us SSD drives which in comparison to HDD are expensive.

64GB SSD = 750GB HDD in cost and the HDD is thicker than a tablet

128GB SSD for a tablet is about $180

also the tablet comes with a touch screen, which on a laptop adds over $100 to the price

on top of that you like a power full CPU which creates lots of heat that needs to be taken care off so the device does not overheat.

have you looked at the Twist from Lenovo?

the only Microsoft based tablet that would remotely work would be a Surface Pro.

However, Tablets don't come with the amount of storage space you indicating you need and not enough memory to run Photoshop.

I think you are stuck with a Laptop or Ultrabook

An Ultrabook seems to me a powerful-pc-like-tablet + keyboard, which is what I want, except I want to customize the package and choose my own keyboard. Shouldn't there be out there an Ultrabook-type-tablet, that is a powerful tablet with full pc potential, without a keyboard (and, consequently, cheaper)?

Surface Pro seems unnecessarily expansive for my needs.
