I've read about this and most people say that the audioengine a5+ has phenomenal sound but not so thundrous bass, and for gaming you need decent bass. (most people get a subwoofer with the a5+)
But there's a problem, there are no a5+'s for me to buy. That's why I need a substitute.
I'd like a system that has high quality sound that's good for both games and movies.
There are also astro a40 and a50 headsets available.
Note: 2.1 and 2.0 speakers or headset. No 5.1 or 7.1

What is your budget? But since you were considering the Audio engines(you must not be in the US because some are in stock at amazon.), I would say 400.00 plus. What country are you in?
I can recommend a number of good speakers(not PC or cheap HT speakers) but they may need an amp.
If you aren't looking for 5.1/7.1 then some good quality 2.0 headphones will do the trick.

You didn't say what country you're so I'm not sure some of my recommendations will be good for you. Also, do these speakers have to be sitting on your desk or will floorstanding speakers be ok?
Quick recommendations of good quality, 500.00 won't get you high quality speakers unless you find some nice used speakers which would be the way to go. A new/used stereo shop is your best bet.
May need a sub woofer but the bass they put out is clean(not thumpy or fuzzy) non-poweredhttp://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=MLMO10 199.00 each.
Good clean bass, terrific buy for the price. Non-powered.http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003Y3OJXY/ref=s9_simh_gw_p147_d5_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-5&pf_rd_r=1XXAWN7RQ7H7D25G38QT&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938731&pf_rd_i=507846
Not much bass and would need a sub. non-powered. http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS22-LR-Designed-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers/dp/B008NCD2LG/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1376927148&sr=1-1&keywords=andrew+jones
If you are serious about building a good audio system, I would buy the best(used would be nice) front main speakers you can afford with a 20.00 thrift store receiver to start out with instead of buying just some cheap disposable speakers. Then add components as you need and can afford them.
The Astro's are really overpriced but decent.
