Type of processor

hello i am a student in a college i am looking for a laptop that is fair on price and description, however i will use this laptop for my personal gain as well as school use. i am not an expert on laptops but does the processor really matter? which type should i look for in a laptop? i will need it for typing up papers are possibly downloading media/audio watch movies on it as well. can you recommend me a laptop that i can purchase ????

for non heavy use, I personally think the most important factors are:

1. general speed, which will be dictated by cpu power and storage type(e.g SSD > Hybrid HDD > 7200 rpm HDD > 5200 rpm HDD in speed)
2. Screen Resolution. no point in displaying 1080p video when your monitor resolution doesnt support it
3. Storage Size. for those who store alot of videos/music/pictures/files
4. Budget. the general deciding factor of a purchase

Well u could just go for the cheapest laptops (just remember not to buy refurbished laptop) and pick up one which has 500GB HDD is OK. Nearly all laptops sport dual-core CPU and 4GB or more memory. Better using laptop w/ Celeron or Pentium CPUs.

@dudewitbow sounds fair i will have to loo into that. didn't really notice that
@rgd1101 i found one on wal-mart website it is cheap and has that processor i believe it was an AMD A6-4400M Accelerated Processor

Refurbished laptops may have some potential problems and u may have to pay more than the price of the laptop to repair.

If u could afford it A6-4400M is fine. Does it go under $400 it sounds like a good deal.

I would go to the store and try one or two different one. For school paper/movie/music, any processor with 2 core would be enough as long as you don't run a lot of applications at the same time.

Just make sure it not a netbook, which is crap.
