I've recently built a new computer and the sound that came with the motherboard is VIA. After setting my speakers as default output, every time i re-boot my computer it un-selects it and won't play any sound until i open it up again and select default... how do i fix this?

Solution
I had a similar, but not exactly the same, audio problem on M5A78L-M/USB3 & windows 8.1 x64:
I had to follow these steps to get VIA VDeck working :
1) Upgrade MB to BIOS version 1801 older versions DO NOT WORK CORRECTLY for me :

Pay attention having the right version ! i mean for your motherboard (i made the mistake and got the 1801 for m5A78L (not L-M) and it refused to update hopefully.......
2) Download and install the latest VIA drivers x64 win 8.1 for VIA VINYL HD AUDIO Chip VT1708S => Version 6.0.11.0200C (19 DEC 2013)

Do you have "%PROGRAMFILES%\VIA\VIAudioi\HDADeck\HDeck.ini"? If so is it set to read only?
Do you have this in your HDeck.ini?

I had the same problem with that motherboard and driver. In msconfig>startup i found "VDeck.exe -r". This "-r" is causing the problem. I just disabled it in msconfig, rebooted, and spdif was working immediately..

! ! ! ! ATTENTION: WINDOWS 8.1 WON'T CHANGE THE DRIVERS UNTIL YOU FORCE IT TO DO IT ! ! ! !
So, STEP 3 is NECESSARY
3) Go to Device Manager -> Audio devices -> HD Audio -> right-clic -> Update and browse to the folder with the here above decompressed VIA package folder (VIAHDAudio) -> Ok
4) Reboot now and you should be able to use the VIA HD Vdeck, (as it works for me ;-). pay attention that VDECK starts minimized in tray...

PS: 1) I have a "french" windows 8.1 install, so i'm not sure of correct device manager elements names in english......

2) IF you reinstall the VIA drivers package, you will have to REDO step 3, otherwise, windows WILL return to it's generic driver ! ! !
