Laptop fan random speedup, calms down when lid is moved

I have a very odd laptop fan issue- the fan will randomly go to max speed (happens mostly when laptop is being moved) despite there being no load or heat. I've discovered that it can be returned to the appropriate speed by tilting the lid backwards or forwards and/or by picking the laptop up and tilting it. I've blown out all the dust from the fan to make sure that wasn't the issue, and the fan itself seems to be functioning perfectly fine. Maybe there's some kind of faulty sensor? Would that make any sense? Anyway, it isn't an extremely pressing issue, I'm just very curious as to what might be causing it.
The laptop is an HP Pavilion dv7 Quad Edition.

Thanks in advance.

The fan increases and decreases in speed normally with temperature and cpu/gpu load, this is independent of that; a totally random and sudden increase to max speed. For example, it just happened at the temps were at ~45. And the fan wont go back down over time as temperatures decrease- it only goes back down when I employ the "move laptop or lid" solution.

Aaaah yeah that'd make a lot of sense, the wiring must be close to the hinge that moving the lid shifts them around. I'll look in there and hopefully take care of it. Thanks a bunch!
