I currently have the Logitech G930. I have had it for about 1 year now and i have never really been pleased with it for various reasons. The two biggest reasons are

1: They are really huge, heavy and look wierd on my small head.
2: The sound quality is not worth 120 dollars. I don't have a lot to compare it to, but i know that this was a ripoff!

Since i mostly do gaming with my friends and occasionally listen to music i started looking for a good gaming headphone that wasn't huge and that had good sound quality. I soon found out that the better way to go was to buy a pair of good quality headphones from a "real" sound company (sennheiser, audiotechnica...), buy a soundcard (for virtual 7.1 surround) and buy a dektop microphone.

After endless hours of reading on more than 10 different forums where everybody wrote differently and where i almost went crazy, I started looking for myself and came up with a plan. This is where the real question gets asked. Is this a good setup?

Setup:

Headset: sennheiser HD558
Microphone: samson C01U
Soundcard: Asus xonar DSX

The most important part of the setup is that it has to work for gaming (kind of picking out enemy locations from sound and so on)

I know that this question probably has been asked a thousand times (if thats the case, im the worst googler ever)

Sorry for my English if it bothers anybody (i'm not a native english speaker)

I went from a pair of $350 Sennheisers to the G930 because I got tired of standing up and ripping them off my head. And while I wouldn't say the 930s are their equal, I can't say that I am disappointed in what Im using now. Granted, I don't get to game very often as time limited due to job obligations but I dont find the sound of the G930s as objectionable.....and this from a guy who mods expensive tube audio components in my home sound system to improve the factory sound.

As far as ya targeting interest, might wanna augment ya surround sound with sonic radar

Sonic Radar is a HUD that is useful in FPS games. It shows a visual representation of where sounds are coming from. The location of footsteps, gunshots, explosions and anything else is shown in the 360 degree HUD while gaming.

HUD can be made more transparent and its location on the screen changed. Sonic Radar very useful feature when gaming with stereo headsets, where surround effects are simulated and may not be easy to pinpoint.

I currently have the asrock z77 extreme 6. I thought about not buying a sound card, but then I googled around a bit and most people recommended it since the asrock doesnt have a very good soundcard built in. And if I dont buy a sound card, could i still get the virtual 7.1 surround sound?
