Hey guys, I'm thinking about purchasing a laptop to use for my PhD program in Statistics. Will be running softwares like R and MATLAB for the most part, and would like for the laptop to last at least 5-6 years.

Budget ~ $1500 or less but hopefully closer to $1000

Think at least an i7 and 8-16mb RAM would be what I'm looking for, as well as a slight preference for screen size closer to 15 inches and good resolution. Don't have a huge preference on brands, but was wondering if anyone could recommend me some models and their expected price range (so I could keep my eyes peeled for slickdeals, etc.).

Thank you so much!

Your best choice is Lenovo ThinkPad .. for the Durability , nothing can beat those notebook.

I would go for this one :

http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/w-series/w530/

be sure to pick a Quad core CPU , you know them from "QM" Q for Quad.

and choose 1920 x1080 Monitor

If you want more professional graphics you can upgrade to Quadro K2000

but if you dont do AutoCad or 3D dont bother ...

and this why ThinkPad are better :

What do you think about the Ideapad Y410p on sale right now with the back to school event? or the Y510p which also has 1920x1080 resolutions? Seems like they're offering more of a sale on the Ideapads, and I honestly don't have too great of an idea what the differences are exactly.

Beside thinkpad, Macbook is also known for its durability but the price is above your budget. Unless you want to use the 13.3" version.
Asus is also good brand, so I recommend you Asus N56VJ-DH71 Currently at US$ 943.

Short Specs:
15.6″ Resolution 1920×1080
Intel i7-3630QM
8GB DDR3
1TB HDD
Nvidia GT 635M 2GB DDR3

The Graphic is not powerful but way beyond your needs.

Have a nice day
