It depends on what on board sound you have and if you are happy with that before buying a soundcard. But since you are using stereo headset to get simulated surround you may need a sound card if your motherboard isn't up to the task.

The ASUS and the Claros are nice cards but overkill for gaming. The audio quality for games is fairly average.

Creative has very good gaming quality because there surround sound software virtual from 2.0 to 5.1. is excellent. SO that is another card to consider. Plus it comes with a good mic. A lesser priced version is the Z, link to the Zx. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102049

Happy surround, the Prisoner...
Considering the problems with the Phoebus sound card, you may want to stay away from that card. But then many sound cards seem to have driver issues, it just seems this one is worse.

You may just want to save some money and use your motherboard sound. If it isn't good enough then you can always get a sound card later. Also consider Creative sound cards too.

Are you sure a sound card wont help?
This is the guy that told me to get a sound card. He has a Xonar Essence and a lot of subscribers.

If you could get a sound card then what would it be? I don't want to spend more then I should, I just want 7.1 and good quality sound.

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium is a good card but the Creative Z series that I linked to above has SBX surround sound which is an upgrade from CMSS®-3D. Better for gaming and after hearing it compared to older Creative cards and the newer ASUS cards, for surround gaming it works wonderfully.
