So I finally decided to get rid of cable, I am just sick of the outrageous monthly bill I get. Are there any good hdtv antennas out there that anybody could recommend? I have never really been in the market for one, so I am new to this. I am going to try and keep it inside.

Solution
If you have an HDTV connect the cable line directly to your TV (without a cable box). Many cable companies (including the one I had before I cancelled). Still send signal to tune local stations in HD. This method will allow you to get most of the stations you would get with an antenna without having to mess with the antenna.

Give it a try if you haven't already.
1. Connect the cable line to your TV
2. Have the TV do a scan for channels

(If you are wondering, doing this is NOT illegal.)

If you insist on getting an antenna I hear the Mohu Leaf is one of the best!

You do not require a specialized 'HDTV' (ASTC) antenna. Dependent upon your proximity to the station towers, a small set of 'rabbit ears' will work just dandy.

As dark_lord69 noted, your local stations are not encrypted via your cable QAM signal but I would question the legality of such a maneuver in many jurisdictions.

The signal quality is degraded below that of regular OTA broadcast TV, too.
