TV responds poorly to remote: Is my TV dying?

Yes, I have changed the batteries.

This has been happening over recent months with my KDL-46HX800 Sony LED TV. From the moment I power it on, the unit responds very poorly and sluggishly to the remote for several seconds until it "warms up".

Changing inputs, changing channels and volume (ONLY after power-on) is painful. Even trying to get into the TV's menu operations.

I bought it in November of 2010. The TV did survive a lightning storm a while back from which one of the HDMI ports fried but was repaired. I wonder if there is a lingering effect from that outage and something is seriously wrong.

What could be wrong? Would it be cost-effective to have my TV repaired?

Either way, I think I'm buying a Samsung next year.

Ask a friend to use a universal remote or try programming one of the Cable comp remotes to your tv and see if the error still there. a dirty or bad ir devices can cause your error. On your tv is the ir blocked or dirty???

Back when I had cable, this was a problem using the other remote as well.

The IR is not blocked/dirty, but again, this mainly happens on power-on. I also tried to replicate the problem using the TV's volume and channel buttons, but not able to notice anything similar by the time it's powered on. This sympton can be quite unpredictable, but I think something is wrong. The TV shouldn't take so long to respond to the remote.

Another example is, on power-on, I'll hit the volume and get no response. Then, magically, twenty seconds later, the volume shoots up to 60! Of course, same symptons with the channel and input.
 
If the tv has a power board..it could be a issue that the power board is failing. At post the power board output is a little low. The other issue could be a part or soilder joint that cracked. When the part heats up or the crack is closed...the tv works. You can google service parts for your tv see what the cost is to replace main board in the tv.
