Getting 5.1 Sound for Home Theatre PC

Hello,

I was hoping I could get some help trying to get surround sound from my computer for a home theatre setup in my lounge room.

I have a PC connected to my AV receiver via HDMI through my graphics card - ATI Radeon HD 5670, and a HDMI cable from the AV receiver to the TV. According to the specs, the graphics card is capable of playing 7.1 sound and I have read of other posts on this forum of people getting 5.1 surround sound through this graphics card. I have installed the latest drivers from the AMD website for a Windows 7 64-bit graphics card.

Looking at the Playback devices, I get the 'AMD HDMI Output' option and when I try to configure speakers I get the 5.1 Surround option but when I test them, I only hear from the front left and front right speakers. Interestingly, when I play a video through VLC with a/52 over s/pdif, I can hear sound coming from all speakers and I get different sounds from the center speaker to the other speakers. However, if I play the 5.1 audio device within VLC I only get sound from the front two speakers and no voices because it isn't coming through the center speaker.

Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. I've been trying to get it to work for a few days now and I'm getting close to tearing my hair out :)

Cheers,

Thanks purrcatian for your suggestion. I have tried to configure the speakers in the control panel, however, as I stated above, I am able to select 5.1 as an option but only the two front speakers actually make noise when I test it in the configuration wizard...
