Hi everyone!
I'm trying to buy speakers as a gift to someone who is an audio junkie and knows his stuff. The problem is I have no idea about any of it. I'm not trying to set women back a few years but I am totally clueless. Should I buy him a subwoofer? And what kind of speakers are reputable and good? He already has a stereo receiver does that matter or affect the kind of speakers I need to get him? Basically I have no idea and would appreciate any help.

well, it's nearly impossible to do without knowing the equipment he currently has - if he's an "audio junkie" like you say, you'll do more harm than good in guessing what to get him

I suggest you come back and report exactly what equipment he has, so we can make sound suggestions

OR

simply have a chat with him and tell him you want to purchase some equipment for him, and what is it he would want...

There are different web sites you can gain a lot of knowledge from about audio. Start from there.Speakers are a listeners own preference to begin with.

@tp

a receiver is a nice all in one solutin if you have speakers and multiple sources. a better audio setup (without receiver) can cost quite a bit more money sometimes...

i'm not an audiophile but i do appreciate good sound. i use a receiver since it fits my multiple source setup and is within budget. its also quite a bit less complicated. you can appreciated good sound and still use a receiver... just saying.

lol... actually receivers don't all stink

I have in my bedroom a early 90s Pioneer VSX-D1S ... 130WPC ... and it is really 130..btw.. sounds very very good. run it with some B&W V202 speakers.

this think will put the hurt on many the poweramp

atm I'm also listening to a Denon DRA-545R 65WPC w/ some JBL J2050 speakers ... sounding very nice indeed

so... what would help from the OP is what hardware the intended recipient already has (namely amp(s)/ preamp .. what speakers do they have now?

what else would help is if you post what budget you are working with as well... doesn't do much good for someone to post aweome $1500 speakers if you can only spend $200 or something right...

i completely agree...

receivers are not all bad. they in fact can be quite useful depending on the situation!

i'm running a vsx-30 with some klipsch quintet iv 5.0 satelite speakers and a 450w subwoofer and i couldnt be happier.

i dont think we can call this thread dead yet either since its only 2-3 days old. no need to continue posting though unless we hear a response.
