Best laptop < $700. Touchscreen or not?

Okay so the time has finally come to get a new laptop. My current laptop is about 8 years old, and the thing BARELY functions anymore.

I'm starting grad school, and I'd like a decent laptop that is reliable and decently fast. I have a great desktop for gaming, etc., so I don't need the laptop for anything like that. Basically just productivity, some media, probably no real gaming.

I know I could get a very basic laptop for probably $300 that would work fine, but I'm planning on having this laptop for probably 5 years or so, so I don't mind putting in a bit extra to get something better.

I've played with a few laptops at Best Buy just to get a feel for them, but to be honest its a bit too artificial in the store to know how you'll actually feel using it. Most laptops come with Windows 8 now, and it sounds like a touchscreen is much better for that. It seems weird to me to have a touchscreen laptop, but maybe its efficient after you get used to it? So with that in mind, these are the main 2 competitors I've got in mind:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=34-312-811&Tpk=34-312-811

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009F1JL5A/ref=pe_224100_30747870_pe_epc__1p_0_ti

If anyone has any other recommendations, please let me know. I have to buy this in the next couple weeks. The ASUS one on amazon seems to be a pretty good deal at $100 less than Newegg, but I'm open to any suggestion.

TL;DR = Need a decent laptop for college. Are either of these 2 good? Touchscreen worth it? Any other recommendations?

i can comment for the lenovo u310, i really like that laptop myself, and was thinking about getting it for the same purpose however , it has really bad wifi connectivity, i don't know if they have fixed it in the recent models, but lenovo said that a solution is not in the near future, the antenna design is really bad, you can do a little more research yourself, there was a huge thread on the lenovo website about this issue on these models u310/u410 etc.

as far as touchscreen goes, i believe it is more for multimedia applications to make it feel like a tablet for some, but for school work, i believe i could do without and most as well, so it is more of a preference thing, personally i would not get it because it is just one more thing that can mess up.

Yeah the Wifi was something I was worried about with the u310 but I didn't know if that was just on older models or not. What about the ASUS I listed? I can't see any major problems with that from what I've seen. And at $600, am I likely to find anything better at that price range?

Don't...

The ASUS VivoBook S400CA-DH51T 14-Inch Touch Ultrabook just went on sale for $599. At that price I'm thinking it is the best option. Anyone have any last minute alternatives?
