I picked up a Kenwood vr 309 today. Its pretty old and only has a single optical input. My TV is a Sony kdl-46v5100. I would like to run the PS3 to the tv with HDMI then output the DTS/audio to the receiver through the television's optical out. When I do this the receiver is only getting stereo. When I switch the optical directly to the receiver I get DTS. This must be a settings issue? Thanks!

And with the PS3 to change your audio out you have to go to sound settings and change that. Like right now my PS3's HDMI is to my monitor for video, but I have the analog out for the sound going to my computer speakers.

I did check out the settings in the PS3 and activated Dolby 5.1 and DTS. When I first set it all up they were disabled. I was hoping that would fix it but it did not. How does the PS3 pick the audio signal to send out. Is it sending the 5.1 to the television or is it detecting a tv and only sending stereo?

It would by default send it through the HDMI. But you can change that, Can you not run the optical out cable from the optical out port on the back of the PS3 to your reciever?
