Hi I just purchased a Lenovo Y500 gaming laptop last night (6/25/13). It comes with Windows 8. I want to downgrade to Windows 7. I already have a retail copy of Windows 7 Ultimate on me. There's also Windows 7 drivers on the official Lenovo site.

I do not know how to downgrade to Windows 7, I also want to backup Windows 8 in case any problems occurs when installing/using Windows 7, so I can easily rollback to Windows 8 if I have too. Another problem I have is Nvidia GeForce GT750M is said to not work with Windows 7 for some reason. I am not sure of this since it is June 2013....it should be supported by now.

Here is my Laptop specs:
OS: Windows 8 (x64)
CPU: Ivy Bridge Intel Core i7 3630QM - 2.40GHz Quad-Core 6MB Cache
Display: 1920x1080 15.6" LED
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GT750M GDDR5 2GB
RAM: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz
HDD: 1TB 5400rpm
Optical Drive: DVD Recordable (Dual Layer)
Network Card: Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230
Bluetooth: Bluetooth Version 4.0
Pointing Device: Industry Standard Multi-Touch 2 button touchpad
Battery: 6 Cell Lithium-Ion

Also, on one last thing, I have not gotten this laptop yet, I just want to be prepared of whats ahead. I am expected to get this laptop on Friday the 28th.

Buy the backup DVD from Lenovo with Windows 8 on it (you can order it with or after the laptop), and do a fresh install of Windows 7, i.e. let it quick format the drive and start from scratch.

Doesn't the DVD come with the laptop? It does not make sense to not come with it. There was no option to order it with my laptop. Is there a way to make your own backup disc? I also have a external hdd to use as backup as well.

Windows 8 is on a hidden partition on the hard drive. Anytime you want to re-install Windows 8 all you need to do is press the right key during the boot up process so that you can get to the setup menu.

Create an image of the C: drive with Windows 8 installed by using the OneKey software which comes preinstalled with Lenovo IdeaPad laptops. Backup to DVDs.

After creating the backup, you can then proceed to install Win 7.

I read that all the partition have to be erased in order to install Windows 7. Is this true? Also what else do I have to do? I have to turn on Legacy Boot and something else?

Ahh... yes. I heard that Win 8 introduces a new file system and I guess it is not compatible with any other.

In that case you will need to create bootable for Win 8 with Onekey. You will likely need to span it onto two single layer 4.7GB DVDs, I don't believe it will accept dual layer 8.5GB DVDs to create a bootable recovery disk. Make sure the recovery discs are actually good by using them to re-install Win 8 before proceeding to completely wipe the hard drive.

Good luck.
